Dungeon Runners Firstlook
Written By: Kevin VanOrd | Tags: Dungeon Runners, PC, NCSoft
May 14,2006 - NCSoft has some wild plans for their PlayNC service. Korean gamers have been using alternate pay plans for online gaming for some time, but in the United States, the monthly payment standard for MMO's has gone mostly unquestioned. NCSoft has yet to announce just how pricing will work for Dungeon Runners and similarly distributed titles, but the concept is intriguing. You download and play for free, and pay extra for additional content. We don't know yet how much it will cost or what that content is, and actually, NCSoft is more concerned with game quality  than the final pricing strategy.

Free or not, Dungeon Runners looks remarkably good, although it strongly resembles WoW, thanks to its colorful art style and overfamiliar interface. We were assured that Dungeon Runner's code has been floating around long prior to World of Warcraft's release, and was not originally a full-time project. Still, fans of fast action MMO's will find a lot to like about Dungeon Runners. Most impressively, all adventuring areas will be randomly generated, so you'll never play the same exact dungeon twice. The popularity of the company's own Guild Wars has seemingly inspired Dungeon Runners' reliance on splintered playgrounds and central meeting areas. Players can take any character to any server they wish, so you'll never need to worry about catching up with friends playing on other worlds.

The main mantra we heard was "maximum fun, minimal downtime." For RPG fans, this means a ton of enemies, a crapload of loot, and meaningful movement within combat. It won't just come down to clicking and waiting; instead, if a fireball is headed your way, you can actually jump out of the way. Even inconveniences like death and travel are completely minimized. Death is simply a free teleport do your home base, and you can return to the same dungeon or choose a less difficult one. And as long as you have a waypoint spell on you, feel free to travel anywhere you like.

Dungeon Runners is set for release sometime later this year. In the meanwhile, stay tuned to Amped IGO for the latest news and media for Dungeon Runners as it develops.
